Accident and emergency departments should be used when someone is seriously ill or injured.


Examples of medical emergencies include:

•loss of consciousness

•acute confused state

•fits that are not stopping

•persistent, severe chest pain

•breathing difficulties

•severe bleeding that cannot be stopped

•severe allergic reactions

•severe burns or scalds


A&E departments are not an alternative to a GP appointment. If your GP practice is closed you can call the out-of-hours service (SELDOC), call NHS 111 or visit a local walk in centre. 


A&E is for emergencies only


A&E departments are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
