Hayfever is an allergy to pollen and is very common.

Symptoms of hayfever are sneezing, a runny nose and itchy eyes.

There is currently no cure for hayfever but it can be well managed.

Antihistamines can help prevent the symptoms and can be bought over-the-counter in pharmacies and are very effective. Other products such as eye drops and nasal sprays can also be bought over-the-counter so if you are experiencing symptoms of hayfever, speak to your pharmacist who can advise you.

Other tips for reducing the symtoms of hayfever are:

• wearing wraparound sunglasses to stop pollen getting in your eyes when you're outdoors

• taking a shower and changing your clothes after being outdoors to remove the pollen on your body

• staying indoors when the pollen count is high

• applying a small amount of Vaseline to the nasal openings to trap pollen grains

Most people with hayfever do not need to see a doctor as a prescription is not needed for antihistamines. However it is advisable to see a doctor if symptoms are not settling with over-the-counter treatments.
